It just so happened that today it is quite difficult to find a modern game based on Dungeons and Dragons, while the popularity of the table is higher than the day. It is not surprising that on such a bezbier a Russian group of developers OWLCAT Games was able to attract attention, appearing on a kickstarter with a proposal to create a game on Pathfinder (slightly modified rules of the DND edition with its universe). The amount was scored in just a month and in 2018 the light saw Kingmaker. Despite the fact that the list of problems of this miracle reached the exemplary distance from Shir to Mordor in length, and although it could somehow simplify this path on the eagles except fans of the Soils, the project turned out to be surprisingly atemic. Therefore, when the Owlcat Games announced the next part and launched the campaign on Kikstarter, money from well -wishers poured out the river. In September 2021, Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous appeared in the open spaces of Steam, GOG and EGS and, let’s say, an ambiguous reaction, although more positive than last time.

So what is Pathfinder all the same: Wrath of the Righteous? This is an isometric RPG, whose heritage goes away in the distant times Baldur’s Gate and Icewind Dale and draws inspiration from these projects. A game where the character creates two hours, and the options for answers in the dialogs can make you think for a few minutes. Here the damage is measured by incomprehensible 1D6, and around the Spirit of Savior, modifiers, descriptors and other strange names are hovering around. Therefore, the threshold of entry is unusually high, but I will tell about this a little later, but for now, according to tradition from the plot.

The tie is quite simple and banal: the army of demons besieges the city and you, as a hero with the same great power, need to help the defenders recapture it, and then declare the Inquisition – sorry, I wanted to say a crusade – and go to beat the horned adversaries. In the process of discharge of epic and intrigues, unexpected turns appear, betrayal at every step threaten the whole enterprise, and besides, the archive question arises of the whole game – who is best romance. The first two acts take place in one breath, events develop and rush like an uncontrollable locomotive, knocked down all barriers. If the rest was at the same level, we would deal with a masterpiece. Alas, this is not so. As soon as events break through the ceiling of the next epic level, suddenly everything goes on decline. The player is forced to engage in the management of cities, forts and armies, travel from point A to point B to kill a couple of giants or find a lout of medium -sized lousy. There was something similar in Kingmaker, there it is necessary to participate in the development of its own kingdom and to explore the territory. But the atmosphere itself suggested a journey and adventures in unknown lands, and public administration did not require close attention. Now we have a minimum number of points of interest (compared to Kingmaker) and the maximum emphasis on management. In the settings, you can turn off all this, but some interesting role moments, like game content, which is already so few, also disappear with it.

A special boiler in hell for developers was prepared for the introduction of armies and battles of the type of Heroes of Might and Magic. But my hatred is aimed at realizing and the most monstrous attitude towards beginners. In the local encyclopedia there are only basics, hints, popping up from time to time give some idea of ​​some things, but this information is simply buried under a ton of new terms and is quickly forgotten. Descriptions of features and spells are often incomplete or do not give an idea of ​​what you are dealing with. Why should the player look on the Internet what is foxes scouring? The description says “you get the ability to scan in the form of Kitsune” and what can be understood from this? By the way, I never found an answer and still don’t know what he is doing. Debafs hanging on the character are not classified and guessing whether it is magic, curse, illness or something else can only be a method. Most bugs are harmless, but there are those that can break the mythical path and quests will stop counting. This happened to me while playing a tricster.

The peak of this insanity was a quest, where it was necessary to go through a check of will, whose meaning purely physically cannot exist in an ordinary character. You can not go through it, but this option is the most logical and even advised.

This situation and many subsequent ones, as well as the ocean of the bugs at the start, convinced me that there was simply no testing before the release. I’ll say even more, the developers simply ignored the players’ complaints from Kingmaker and carefully transferred all the jambs and even bugs to the new part (hello bugs with non -working ESC during the battle).

However, this is not the end, in view of the fact that the protagonist with mythical force became more like a terminator, the opponents also began to add characteristics that at some point simply flew to the stratosphere. Even having knowledge and understanding the game, I often found myself in an interesting position, when the stats of the enemy were simply unbearable, and then it is no longer possible to come to him.

It would seem that the equipment can solve many problems, but it is corny. Situations when you think about what kind of armor to put on, there is practically no, you take what you scrape in local stores. With accessories a complete seam, and I finished the game when three wards did not even have glasses (equipment on my eyes). And the shops are not a panacea, in the process of passing theoretically, the goods of merchants should increase in quality, but in the fifth and sixth act, when the hero returns from where not to spoil, he discovers his old acquaintances from the third act with a similar assortment.

It is profitable to put the general at the head of the army. There is no balance among them, so magicians blowing half the enemy troops are usually the best choice.

Despite all the shortcomings, anyone who respects role -playing games must pass Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous, especially if you understand DND.
